School Story:

Boy I still remember this crazy nite senior year. I refer to it as the nite I almost died 3x. There was a dance- (alibi, I was no dancer for sure) and Barry Troy picked up Jim Rondeau and me in his old Ford van. As we went W. on 144th on our way from Green Lk to the WHS, we were talking and almost went off the road with no guardrail and 50ft drop! At the dance we met up with Dave/Don Berends and Jim Vandewoude with his Fairlane and came up with an M-80 attack later on a Cadet campout. We drove around, got stopped by the fuzz in Hudsonville for dragracing on our way to Holland State Park and eventually made it to the campsite. Dave V knew a backway in down a 2 trac and about 3a we parked and wandered through the woods for some excitement. We synchronized our attack as best we could and whipped about a dozen M-80s and watched the flashlights and chaos down in tentland. All of a sudden the counselors were after us and we scrambled through the woods and really got beat up running through the trees as we found an old barbwire fenceline. We made it to the van and the car and started backing up in a big hurry! After a few hundred yds it looked like the guys in the car were motioning us to stop- so we slowed down and eventually stopped as they were very animated. Dave V got out of his car and said "don't move" and get out. So we walked behind the van a few steps and there was this washout probably 30ft acrost and approx 50ft deep! His flashlite could barely show the bottom. We drove around some and somehow ended up in Standale and slept a little behind an elementary school and the wiring under the dash caught fire! I was trying to kick my way out when Barry yelled "come over the engine cover the doors in back are welded shut!" The van didn't burn much more and went out. Later we got stuff to hotwire it from a gas station when they opened in the morning. Barry suceeded in getting it going again and we jumped in, smelling the residual fire damage and eventually made it back home- what a nite.
I remember street racing, market street, air hockey, the circuit, The Grotto, my 65 Mustang, the 67 Dodge RT, 440 6pack Superbee and out all nite street racing with my pal Bill Andrews. Crazy how it all went down.
I still smile when I remember Pat McGraws old stationwagon. The HS parking lot was gravel and had some big whoops near the entrance. Pat put some bigger tires on his wagon and did a economy lift kit on the rear of the wagon by putting 2x4 spacers in his coil springs. It was lifted up to clear the tires but the rear shocks wern't long enough so he didn't have them hooked up. When he drove through the lot and stopped at the road waiting to turn we laughed as his wagon was still bouncing- alot! Bill A and Myself and a couple others ran to the back of his car and rythmically started pushing his car up and down. We got it going so much the rear wheels were coming off the ground. Pat knew we wern't about to stop with all the fun we were having so when he had an opening he gassed it and took off down the road- it was squealing the tires intermittently as they were only on the road for a second when the backend went back up in the air! I only see Bill occasionally as he is in California- but we get a good laugh everytime we remember that!
